Overview

During a meeting, several team members were asked if they had time to meet with new hires to onboard. Each said they had a lot on their plate, but would make the time.  I pitched to the team an online onboarding course for new hires that provided general information about the company and onboarding documents, which freed up the team to continue work on their respective projects.  I was asked to create two onboarding courses, one for the company, and one specific to a project for which the company is contracted. I also researched and selected the best Learning Management System to host the onboarding courses, uploaded the courses to the new system, and tracked learners progress.

Process

My approach to both versions of the Onboarding course was the same.  The structure is logical and takes the learner through an introduction to the company, the systems that the company uses, then an overview of the onboarding documents the new hire will be completing.   When it came it introductions to the systems the company uses, I created screencasts that highlighted the important area of the systems.  For the template in Storyline, I used a slide deck that was previously created for onboarding.  Finally, I also wanted personalize the course by asking for the learner’s name at the beginning and automatically incorporating their name in the “welcome” slide and the “congratulations for completing the course” slide.  The course went through two or three iterations before receiving final approval from the client.
